Generator PM3 Service
Why perform additional generator maintenance items like a PM3/Cooling System service? Does my engine really need this done?
A generator is in place because a facility needs reliable power. Critical backup power is just that- critical. The ensuing downtime from the failure of backup power equipment needs to be avoided for either critical life-safety, data access, or the financial repercussions of lost operations. Therefore backup power must be in place to maintain that all to critical reliability of your overall system.
Regular maintenance on a generator, like any engine, is key to maintaining dependability.
Just as the oil and filters on a car are changed on a regular basis, the same should be done annually on a generator. What about additional proactive items? What other services are recommended by the manufacturer to optimize reliability and performance?
A PM3 (Cooling System Service) is recommended by most manufacturers every three years. This service includes the replacement of the coolant in your system as well as other consumable components such as hoses, clamps, radiator caps, thermostats, and belts. Here is a sample Scope of Work for a basic Generator PM3 Service:
- Place unit in “OFF” position
- Drain, contain, and dispose of waste coolant from generator
- Remove and Replace all coolant hoses and clamps
- Remove and Replace radiator pressure cap
- Remove and Replace engine thermostat(s) and associated gaskets
- Remove and Replace all belts (including fan, alternator & water pump)
- Refill system with proper concentration of coolant
- Test run unit to operating temperature
- Check for any leaks or issues
- Return unit back to normal mode of operation or “AUTO”
- Dispose of any waste materials in accordance with proper EPA standards
Why wait for cracked hoses and coolant leaks resulting in last minute service calls and repairs?
Rather than wait for cracks and wear on a belt to snap resulting in a down unit and the need for an expensive rental, we recommend proactively replacing these at regular intervals or at the first signs of wear.
Unexpected repair issues lead to emergency service calls, costly repairs, and in some cases, a rental generator for a prolonged period of time. The cost for these items adds up quickly, especially with a rental unit being dispatched and installed. If a generator is critical to the operation of your facility, don’t take for granted that it will always start up when needed. Like anything else, proper maintenance and proactive repair services will help keep your unit up and available in the event of a power disruption.
Let Odyssey Power assist in performing your next PM3 Cooling System service. If you are unsure of when this service was last performed, we can evaluate the unit’s condition or perform a coolant lab analysis to determine how quickly it is needed.
