Batteries – Preemptive Maintenance

Batteries

An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) battery can fail prematurely due to several factors. One of the largest problems that cause battery failure is poor maintenance. Other contributing factors can be high temperatures, poor storage of unused batteries, the number of discharges, over-charging, and reaching the end of the life cycle.

A business cannot stop when the flow of electricity drops which is why an uninterrupted power source is vital for a mission-critical environment. Odyssey Power offers preemptive maintenance services and battery monitoring which provides a reliable solution to get your business back online as quickly as possible. We are here to help you maximize your business uptime.

Most UPS and battery manufacturers recommend at least two preventative maintenance inspections be performed annually. As battery failure is the leading cause of UPS failures, we recommend quarterly battery inspections to help mitigate risk and catch any trending issues. In addition, your maintenance and/or IT department should visually inspect the equipment for signs of wear, damage, or any loose connections on a regular basis.

When making a decision on a UPS battery, there are many items to consider in addition to the runtime requirements in the event of an outage – available warranty, independent field analysis, accessibility for maintenance and replacement amongst others. Another factor to consider is keeping an eye out for obsolete UPS batteries. Each battery manufacturer makes different models with different ratings meaning the physical and chemical properties of each are different. For safety reasons, we highly recommend that your UPS battery cabinet only house the same string of battery – make and model.

Upon inspection of your existing UPS system, Odyssey Power will recommend a UPS battery replacement solution in advance of failure as a preventive measure to help you and your company plan ahead as these are typically larger purchase items.  As an example, most VRLA (valve regulated lead acid) batteries are recommended for a five-year life cycle replacement.  Odyssey will provide you with budgetary estimates in advance of that timeframe so you can prepare in advance.
